What makes a good spreadsheet?

 

Even if you already know what a good spreadsheet can achieve and should look like, you may not have the time to develop high-quality, user-friendly tools and explore the more advanced features Excel has to offer for collecting, manipulating, analysing and presenting data. No time to put together something that others will also be happy to adopt, maintain, and perhaps build upon. Instead, you settle for simple tables, "hack" something that someone else put together years ago, ignore the opportunities for automating repetitive tasks, and live with poor lay-out, slow execution, and lack of error handling.

 

Poorly constructed spreadsheets confuse their users and are - therefore - harder to maintain and more vulnerable to mistakes. Even the cleverest calculations and fanciest features have little impact, if their inputs are ambiguous and their outputs poorly presented.

 

A well planned and well executed spreadsheet, on the other hand, takes a bit more effort and skill to construct, but will offer:

  • easier data entry

  • faster calculations

  • fewer errors

  • better reporting

  • more robustness
